The many types of desks within a store at The Home Depot (THD) needed to be evaluated: Service Desks, a Paint Desk, a Pro Desk for contractors, a Millwork Desk, a Décor Desk, and Check Stands–including Returns, Garden, Self-Checkout, and standard checkouts. The client wanted a way to select the projects to be done in an organized program, rather than the loudest voice getting the attention. EMG was hired to conduct an even, unbiased review of THD desk assets by conducting site surveys to rate the desks and, from them, to make recommendations to prioritize the work.
EMG assisted The Home Depot with developing the national specification to use on all desk replacements across the country. EMG evaluated the potential sites and produced an unbiased review and rating of each desk, recommending to leave “as is” or change it out, allowing Home Depot to project their spend and decide which projects to do each year. EMG then issued a menu bid to more than twenty vendors, recommending the award to be made by Home Depot. Once awarded, EMG finalized the plan/schedule with each contractor and the stores, then managed the remodels through 100% completion, including preconstruction meetings, site visits, and punch walks, being the single source for the stores/contractors/corporate throughout the program, which is ongoing since 2008. Each project requires completion during store closure in one to two nights. An annual plan was created to evaluate condition and schedule desk replacement at a known cost, and the model is now known and consistent across the county.
